Privacy and terms

This service stores things you have chosen to remember. That only works if you know exactly what is kept, who can reach it, and how to remove it. Written plainly, and without claiming more than is true.

What is stored

Your email address. Given at sign-up. Used to identify the account and to send you a key if you lose every device.
Your memory files. Whatever you or your AI writes — names, contents and dates. This is the service; there is nothing clever happening to it.
Keys, hashed. Device keys and sign-in tokens are stored as SHA-256 hashes, never in a readable form. A key is shown to you once and cannot be recovered afterwards, only replaced.
Connection records. When an AI signs in: which client, when, when it was last used, when it expires. This is what the “Signed-in AIs” list shows you.

What is not stored

No analytics, no tracking, no advertising. There is no third-party script on this site at all, and no webfont — nothing here contacts anyone but this server.
No request logs. The server does not record who read or wrote what, or when. Errors are logged; ordinary use is not.
IP addresses are not kept. They are held in memory to limit sign-ups and recovery emails, and are gone when the process restarts. They are never written to the database.
Your memory is never used to train anything, sold, or shared with anyone.

Who can see your memory

Be clear about this one. Anyone holding one of your keys can read and write your memory — that is what a key is for. And the operator of this service has database access, so it is technically possible for him to read your files. He does not, but you should choose what you store here knowing that he could. Nothing here is end-to-end encrypted.

If that is not acceptable for something, do not put it here. This is a good place for how a project stands and how you like to be worked with. It is not a place for passwords, card numbers, or anything you would not put in a note-taking app someone else runs.

Where it lives

knowsme (formerly Portable Memory) is run by Godspeed Digital Ventures, Accra, Ghana.

It runs on rented cloud infrastructure and uses a small number of established providers: a server, a managed database that holds your account and your memory files, and a mail service that sends the recovery email and nothing else. They handle your data only in order to run the service, never for their own purposes, and none of them is given it to keep or to use. If you want to know exactly who they are before you trust the service with something, ask at the address below and you will be told.

Traffic is encrypted in transit, and the database is encrypted at rest.

Deleting it

One file — tell your AI to forget it, or delete it from the app.
One AI’s access — end its session under “Signed-in AIs”, or revoke a device key under “Your devices”. It stops working immediately.
Everything — DELETE /account?confirm=<your email> with your key removes every file, key and session, and the account itself. It is immediate and cannot be undone. There is no backup from which your files can be restored.

Terms, briefly

This is early access, run by Godspeed. It may be unavailable, may lose data, and comes with no warranty and no guarantee of uptime. Keep anything you cannot afford to lose somewhere else as well.
Your memory is yours. No ownership over what you store is claimed. You can take it out at any time.
Do not use it for anything illegal, to store other people’s personal data without their knowledge, or to attack the service. Accounts doing so will be removed.
Limits apply so one account cannot exhaust a shared service: a size cap per file and per account, and a cap on files. You will be told if you reach one.
Liability is limited to what you have paid, which is nothing.

Changes and contact
